Just a quick update on my bathroom project: Dan began hand-crafting our vanity last weekend. He spent Friday through Sunday in the garage measuring, cutting and constructing the vanity…all while I was away with my Mom in Virginia visiting with my Grammy. I am pleasantly surprised by the results so far.

Here’s Dan doing a little bit of touch up sanding.

We have quite a few more steps to complete until we’re finished, but we’re getting there. Next we have to: paint, build the doors and drawers and choose our counter tops. That’s all for now, I’ll write more soon once we begin the painting and door/drawer crafting.

You may be surprised to find out that having a hardwood floor in a room that traditionally has tile, like a bathroom or kitchen, is actually quite common and perfectly safe and durable against water and other spills. (See our entry about kitchen hardwood flooring concerns) Perhaps you have a hardwood floor in your own kitchen. More and more homeowners are warming up to the cozy feeling of hardwood flooring throughout the home, even in less likely places, but it's also important to recognize the role that hardwood surfaces can have even beyond the surfaces you walk on.

When people think of wood in the kitchen, they most likely think of cabinets. Granite countertops paired with luxurious wooden cabinets has been a growing trend with home and apartment renovations. It seems like when people see "granite countertops, cherry cabinets, stainless appliances!" in a listing, they're sold! But let's step back for a moment and have a look at a hardwood surface you probably wouldn't think of at first - hardwood countertops.

Your first reaction is probably the same as mine was - won't that stain? Won't water get in there? Can I use it kind of like a built in cutting board? Then what happens if the slice marks trap bacteria? Ahh! Thankfully, this article has recognized that hardwood countertops are a viable option for the kitchen, and just reminds homeowners that the extra warmth requires just a little extra care to make sure it retains its luster for years to come. Sealing or oiling periodically will keep the counter in top shape, and it never hurts to use a cutting board instead of cutting directly on the counter (even though you can do that!) if you're concerned about scratches and dents. Though depending on your home's decor, you may view those scratches as a symbol of your kitchen being lived in and a place of memories, just as you would with a hardwood floor.

Other posts you may enjoy:

Expressing Personal Style is the Latest Trend in Kitchen Design
Conflicting information about hardwood floors...HELP!
Installing hardwood floors in a bathroom

The popular TV show has asked builders and suppliers from all over the country to help out in New Orleans continuing road to recovery.

The program will air at 8/7c on ABC Sunday, May 18, 2008.

Deltec homes and buildings are of a classic round design, noted for their beautiful cathedral ceilings. So ironically, that is where Carlisle’s Heart Pine flooring will be featured.

“We say we craft our floors one board at a time, but in this case it was a ceiling,” says Don Carlisle. “We’ve known the folks at Deltec for quite a while and have partnered with them on other projects, but this one was really special. The whole Extreme Makeover: Home Edition effort to help Katrina victims is a very worthy cause and we’re proud to have contributed.”

Joseph Schlenk, Deltec’s Director Of Sales and Marketing adds: “To build a home in four days was an impossible task. We accomplished our mission because a lot of ordinary people exerted extraordinary efforts. It would have never been possible without the help of our builder coalition, the volunteers and our sponsors, especially Carlisle Wide Plank Floors. The heart pine Carlisle provided was stunning and anyone who entered the was amazed by its beauty. We thank them for their generous contribution.”

I was able to speak with quite a few clients that our sales group is working with and help them locate some new samples, talk about the wood species they are interested and overall talk about their projects.

Jane stopped in, she is one of Lynne Rafuse’s clients and she lives in Georgetown—a short jaunt from our center. I enjoyed my chat with her about Heart Pine and how she’s really looking forward to it in the complete renovation project of her home. I also had the pleasure to speak with Sue and Jay of Maryland. They bought our Eastern White Pine from Gary Ryer a few years ago and installed the floor themselves. In their upcoming project, they want to use the Eastern White Pine again, but they want wider boards, up to 15” this time!

Throughout the night, it got the chance to meet many other Carlisle friends. She’s got a blog of her own. Our friendly neighbor, Doug Van Tress from The Golden Triangle also stopped by. Come to think of it, they probably have more in common with a rock band than you might think-they work together in a small group, they "tour", traveling around the country to different venues they're working at, and they live to get people pumped about the awesome work that they do. Balash and Greene bring a mix of master craftsmanship with a refreshing approach to floor design that pushes the limits of what was previously thought possible with hardwood flooring, and I got a VIP pass to go behind the scenes and find out what makes their wood floors rock.

Athens, Georgia-based hardwood flooring contracting company Balash and Greene was started about 2 ½ years ago by business partners Kevin Greene and Chris Balash. They knew they had something special to offer people with their artistic talents and passion for hardwood floors, and that has really launched them to success in the short few years that they've been in business. So how did they find Carlisle Wide Plank Floors? Greene's sister-in-law happened to have some leftover Carlisle hickory from a flooring job in her garage. Greene was so impressed by it, he found Carlisle's number on the website and immediately called, not even realizing that there was a design center right in Atlanta!

After meeting and talking with Carlisle's representatives, Greene knew that he wanted to work with Carlisle in his future projects. "They had the same outlook on the craftsmanship aspect of the work." he said. "The attention to detail that they put into everything - we do the same thing. It might take more time or more money or more effort to [do things right], but it's so worth it. They understand that in everything they do."

As you can imagine, this attention to detail and quality really pays off, as seen in the Antique Oak detail work featured above. Balash and Greene have not only delighted their "fan base" across the country with their unique wood patterns and fine detail work, they're also breaking into show biz! After finding out about their beautiful floor designs and the sustainable, green aspect of their floors, the Discovery Home Channel gave them a call to be featured on their new green home improvement show, Greenovate, due to air this Summer on the new channel Planet Green (check your local listings). "Green can be beautiful," said Greene. "[With our] craftsmanship and design [combined with] building something out of sustainable materials, it's going to last forever and nobody's going to rip it out in 10 years."

Moving forward, Balash and Greene have taken care to continually look for new ways to expand and improve their hardwood contracting business without sacrificing any of the quality that their customers have come to expect. "We're moving toward what we like to think is the top of the installation world." said Greene. As is the course with many rising stars, Balash and Greene are planning to break away from their home town and have their sights set on Los Angeles for their big break, working with Carlisle's L.A. branch. They look forward to the change, facing a market that allows for more creative freedom with flooring projects like their Monticello pattern in walnut featured above. "Once you're finished with a project, you can really look at it and be proud of it." said Greene, reflecting on the satisfaction they get from creating a happy customer. "We just love what we do."

To learn more about Balash and Greene's flooring design and their flooring contracting company, head over to their website, BalashandGreene.com.

As a proud member of Carlisle’s marketing team, I wanted to share my most recent do-it-yourself project—the installation of my very first Carlisle floor! I chose Walnut because of its beautiful brown tones with highlights of golden honey and the nice figuring in the grain patterns.

I began my project in September 2007 when my boyfriend Dan and I first decided to embark on the demolition of our current bathroom. We knew straight off that it was going to be a fairly large undertaking, but we also knew it had to be done. After two days of destroying, hauling pieces of old sheetrock, insulation and tile out by the truckload we were finally down to the rafters.

As we have delicately built the bathroom back up we decided to make our project as custom as we could afford. Firstly, we’ve done the entire project ourselves: plumbing, electrical, everything! (We did have the extra hands of our dads helping out, which is great.) Dan invented his own radiant heat system—it’s a built-in subfloor unit with PEX tubing (which we purchased on EBay inexpensively). We were able to install our Carlisle floor directly on top of our radiant heat system. We also did a tile inlay underneath our toilet and in front of our bathtub, and it was really easy to make both the tile and the walnut work nicely together during the installation—we had zero hiccups.

One of the best parts during our renovation was applying the tung oil to our floor. We thought the wood was stunning before we started the finishing process, but as we added the coats of tung oil we were amazed at how it heightens the swirling grains and warm chocolaty tones.

A few holidays, snowmobile season and a litter of Weimaraner puppies later and we are still working on our bathroom! We are hand making our vanity and that’s our current stage of the process. Stay tuned for the vanity and completion of my bathroom

Reclaimed wood floors are a popular option for homeowners and for public buildings as well. The floors give a sense of history to any building. We understand the importance of maintaining that history. A good example of this is the flooring that we have reclaimed from the Guerrant Family Plantation and Algoma Apple Packing Farm.

Two hundred and fifty years ago the 3,000-acre plantation and farm was the site of 100 buildings. The apples grown on this land near Boones Mill, Va., were harvested and shipped to England and played a role in the nourishment of soldiers from the Civil War to the Second World War. Today only a few buildings made from the plantation trees almost three centuries ago remain, but the wood from these structures are still playing vital roles in today’s construction. It’s the story of the Many Lives of An Apple Farm Tree and the Green alternatives it provides for your home.

Their first lifetime was spent as majestic trees providing shelter and shade for forest animals as an integral part in the eco-system. They grew to great proportions and were likely more than 200 to 300 years old before being harvested.

Their second lifetime was spent as components of the Apple Farm’s many buildings: the large packing barn where apples were prepared for shipment to England was built of chestnut; the farmhand’s quarters were constructed of heart pine; and the main building was oak.

In 2002 when the Apple Farm structures were dismantled, the wood was reincarnated again to live out a third lifetime as Carlisle Wide Plank Floors. Some of the wood found new life in the Jeffersonian-style Southern National Bank in Sugarland, Texas, which was being converted into a museum. The customer requested antique oak flooring with a historical connection.

We strive to maintain the line of custody when crafting our floors so that our customers can have a sense that they are treading on a piece of history. We believes the future of his business is predicated on staying true to their “old fashioned,” handcrafted techniques. Our forefathers made building floors a folk art and today at Carlisle we continue this work using the same traditional methods with a modern twist to preserve history.

The story of Robert E. Lee’s personal note to the Guerrant family thanking them for apples donated to Confederate troops made the Apple Farm’s oak a perfect choice for the museum project. Today you can find a portion of an Algoma Apple crate framed and hanging in the museum. Still more wood from the Apple Farm, this time reclaimed eastern heart pine, went to Elizabeth and Joe Currier of Crested Butte, Colo., whose reclaimed floors helped transform 19th-century coal sheds into a 21st-century mountain retreat.

Our process of recycling antique wood starts with the close relationships they’ve fostered with their suppliers to identify structures slated for destruction. Once the old timber structures are inspected and chosen as being suitable for Carlisle’s high standards the barn is carefully dismantled, transported to a lumberyard, and expertly crafted into planks by a professional sawyer. The sawyer first cuts the face of the wood to determine the look of the floor. After that the wood is cut into wide planks, which are then kiln-dried, sized, and carefully graded. Finally, Carlisle’s milling artists hand-selects and finish-mills the wide planks to exacting specifications in preparation for installation. This Green process creates a look and feel that harkens back to days gone by.

“We love our wide plank antique floors so much and take heart in knowing that the recycling process of these floors have been controlled from original barn to finished floor, After several months of enjoying our new purchase, we still walk through our home and admire the unique characteristics of each plank.”
—Mary Daleo

Just like antiques in the furniture world, antique wood is in limited supply. As early American structures dwindle in population, so does the wood. And in the case of Chestnut, the type of wood reclaimed from one building on the Apple Farm, the wood is all but gone in America today due to a blight from an Asian fungus dating back to 1904. Today most Chestnut trees only survive a few years in the forest before they die, making the preservation and reuse of this old timber of vital importance.

So the next time you think about a new floor for your home, consider the Green alternative of recycled wood…it will preserve the history of the tree that once grew in the forest, the history of their original construction, and the history of your own home and family.

It's a warm, sunny day in Seneca, South Carolina. The gentle breeze is wafting off of Lake Keowee and the air is thick with the sound of birds, the rustling leaves, and...the landscapers? Are they cutting down that tree over the walkway?! Ronda Ringo just finished a conference call when I gave her a call, and amidst the hustle and bustle of her daily life as a Solutions Principal for EMC Software, she now feared that her yard was going to be treeless. Thankfully, everything was under control, and I got to learn of the fateful way that Ronda and Carlisle Wide Plank Floors were united.

Outside of her day job, Ronda loves interior design. Over the years, she's assembled an extensive portfolio of things that have caught her eye - carpet samples, paint colors, design ideas, and supply companies. A long-time subscriber of Coastal Living magazine, Ronda had seen an advertisement for Carlisle Wide Plank Floors years ago, and knew that was what she wanted to have in her home someday. She tucked the clipping into her portfolio without too much thought at the time. When it came time for her to design her own home from scratch years later, the light went on and she remembered that little clipping as she discussed her flooring options with her contractor.

She was told that a 3 ½" oak floor would be affordable and look great in her home, but she knew it wasn't right for her. "I even looked at Home Depot and saw their five inch planks for the same price," she said, "but I didn't fall in love. And then I found out, we can go even wider!" She wanted a floor that offered variable width planks, exposed nails, and something that would really resonate with the traditional New England style she wanted her new home to have.

Thinking that the wider planks she had in mind were out of her price range, she reluctantly found herself at a tile store in Atlanta, Georgia. She mentioned to someone that she had really wanted a Carlisle Wide Plank Floor but felt she had to sacrifice and look elsewhere, and that's when one of our very own bloggers, Sharon Bondie, happened to be in the very same store and chimed in, "I work at Carlisle! Let's see what we can do for you!" The rest, as you can guess, is history! Sharon not only found a way to help Ronda find a wide plank floor she could afford, she also stepped right in as part of Ronda's building team, coordinating information to the builders and contractors and making sure everybody was informed and excited to be installing a brand new Eastern White Pine Carlisle floor. "I just really liked how they hold your hand", said Ronda, reflecting on her experience with Carlisle. "A lot of the time I would say, 'Sharon, can you call my builder? I don't want to be the go-between.' and she would! It was so much easier on me."

Looking over the pictures that Ronda provided me, it's clear that a lot of care and collaboration went into installing a beautiful floor in her home. She even has the Eastern White Pine in her kitchen. Since her home's floorplan is so open, she wanted it to really flow and feature the wood wherever possible. "It provides more warmth to the home", she said, "Tile can be too sterile. You lose the authenticity of what the home's supposed to do."

The one thing she would change? The softness of the wood. The Eastern White Pine was an affordable solution for her but she has to be careful. "If you can afford it, I'd say go with the harder floor. I've dropped a few knives and made a few dents!" she laughed. "I just have to have better protection on the chair bottoms. I actually worry more about people with high heels!" I guess the policy will just have to be 'leave your shoes at the door' in her home, but with such a beautiful house on the water, I think it'd be hard not to want to take your shoes off and sit by the window. Even with the inevitable dents and scratches that come from a lived in home, Ronda is very happy with her Carlisle floor. "Building a custom home is hard work," she said, "but it's wearing nice."

I just returned from the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago—what a great show! The venue is in such a beautiful place, bordering Lake Michigan and large enough to fill three exhibit halls worth of kitchen and bathroom products/services. Carlisle’s booth was in the Lakeside Center. Our 200 square foot booth had two of our signature wood floors: 12-16” Eastern White Pine with Plymouth Pumpkin stain and 7-10” Hickory with our Tung Oil finish. Both floors and sample panels were show stoppers and attracted DIY homeowners and architects/designers alike. Our sales staff had a nice time chatting with clients and really enjoyed the high number of people walking KBIS this year. Gary and Erin especially liked answering questions and educating booth visitors about our new Custom Coat™ Pre-Finished floors—our latest product to launch. Brian and Eric, members of our sales staff from our new Chicago design center commented that dispelling common myths about wood floors was one of their favorite topics to speak about.

As I walked the show, I did see some neat products. The latest kitchen and bathroom counters that peaked my interest are of recycled glass and I saw some neat handmade pullware for kitchen or bathroom cabinets, designed to match any style or decor. Lastly, radiant heat—which has become a popular heating source, is a luxury underfoot in bathrooms. Before the show ended I was able to listen to Home Magazine Live, a radio program hosted by Alan Taylor—he interviewed our very own Gary Ryer for a short segment on our wide plank floors.
